Brittany - magical, wild, authentic
Welcome to the Côtes d'Armor, or in the Breton language
« Degemer mat an Aoudou en Arvor »
The Côtes d’Armor and the sea.
This part of the Brittany coastline is one of the most beautiful and spectacular in the region.
The landscapes are varied ranging from cliffs and sculpted granite rocks, an emerald sea and resplendent forests.
The eastern part of the Côte d'Armor coastline, from Saint-Cast to the border with neighbouring Ile et Vilaine, lies the Emerald Coast. A name given because of the colour of the sea in this region. The coast line is varied and to the east opens out into the Rance estuary with Dinard and Saint-Malo facing each other at the mouth.
Costarmoricaine hinterland
Beyond the coastline, the country landscapes are also fascinating. Nature has been largely preserved and the country side is dotted with villages and hamlets just waiting to be discovered.
The beautiful Rance Estuary is a great place for walking with many paths following the river inland with superb views of what could arguably be called one of France's most beautiful rivers.
Further up the Rance lies Dinan a medieval town that is a must visit whilst in the region, and Lamballe further to the west is another town worth visiting.
Gastronomy
Brittany is well-know for its savoury and sweet panckes ('galettes' and 'crepes') which are traditionally accompanied by local cider.
But it's also a region famous for its sea-food: oysters, scallops native to the rigion (Coquilles Saint-Jacques) and mussels notably from the Cancale bay area.
At reception we can provide you with the best addresses to discover Breton gastronomy.
Local traditions and folklore
Traditional Breton fêtes - the Festnoz
Traditional dancing in the Festnoz (simply Breton fetes) comes from the historical activity of preparing ground such as the traditional clay floor of houses or an area for beating wheatby stamping with heavy wooden shoes, or 'sabots'. Neighbours would come together to help each other to get the work done quickly. The work was traditionally accompanied by singing and the steps became dances.
At certain times of the year people would also gather and the dances became a way of having fun, becoming increasingly technical over time.
Today's Festnoz perpetuate this tradition and the dancing can be quite spectacular.
There are many Festnoz in Saint-Cast and the surrounding villages - the atmosphere is great and you can often join in a traditional meal.
