Wonderful walking in the region
Emerald Coast walks
The Emeral Coast is an exceptionally beautiful part of the Brittany coastline.
Many well defined coastal paths exist for walkers of all abilities and allow you to explore the spectacular Emerald coast. There are also cycle and mountain-bike trails as well as paths for horses.
Walks around Saint Cast
Thre are roughly 30 kms of well-signed walks along the coast between the cliffs of La Fresnaye Bay and the Arguenon estuary. You'll never venture far from a sea-view.
The GR 34 (GR stands for Grande Randonnée in French and denotes exceptional 'official' walking trails) is a major coastal path that goes all around the Brittany coast. Originally intended for Customs and Excise surveillance, this path goes through Saint Cast, along the beach and over some of the preserved headland terrain.
There is also a new 'promenade' - the Soleil Levant walk (walk of the rising sun) which meanders along the rocks for about 600m between The Grande Plage and the Port.
Cap Fréhel
The headland and amazing Cap Fréhel cliffs are an area of exceptional natural beauty; a conservation site and bird sanctuary.
The 750 acre headland site is mostly preserved heathland and leads toward spectacular cliffs of pink sandstone which plunge 70m into the sea.
Here you can enjoy a fabulous panorama stretching from the Grouin Point to Bréhat Island.
Along the cliff edge, and on the 4 mini-islands opposite, you will have the chance to see a variety of sea-birds and their nests, the Cap being a home to thousands of birds.
Erquy and its headland
From Erquy you have a lovely panorama of the Saint Brieuc bay.
Much of the Erquy site is a conservation zone for architectural (Chateau de Bienassis) or archaeological reasons (the 'Oppidum du Cap Erquy' or 'Ceasars' Camp).
You will also see some fortified cliffs dating from the iron age and ancient trenches.
In and around Dinard
COASTAL WALKS
8 kms of coastal path provide a perfect way of getting a feel for Dinard and it's dominant position, opposite Saint Malo, at the head of the Rance Estuary. Benefitting from a microclimate, Dinard has palm trees give a very distinct flavour to this most elegant of Brittany's resorts.
Views acroos the estuary to Saint-Malo are certainly worth the walk.
LA VICOMTE
Starting from the Rance Estuary barrage take the path toward the Prieuré beach at the entrance to Dinard. Here the walk offers fantastic views across the Rance to Saint-Servan with it's Tour Solidor and the Rocher de Bizeux.
PROMENADE DU CLAIR DE LUNE
Dinard is reknowed for its famous 'Moonlight walk'. Stretching from the Prieuré beach to the Pointe du Moulinet. Protected from the westerly winds this beautiful promenade, with its gardens and exotic flowers, offers great views of Dinard and the Rance estuary. During the summer months part of this walk is illuminated and music is played through speakers along the walk. Very romantic !!
LA MALOUINE
This path heads out of Dinard to the noth and west via the Malouine Point to saint Enogat. Start off at the Ecluse plage (the main Dinard beach, and follow the path around the Malouine headland. You'll have a greatview of some of the spectacular villas perched on the cliffs, testimony to Dinard's Belle Epoque period.
LE PORT BLANC
Continuing on from Saint Enogat you can follow the coastal path, passing by the grotto Goule aux Fées and the Roche Pelee Point to Port Blanc with its lovely beach.
Dinan and the hinterland
Three walks based around Dinan and the Rance estuary.
LA HISSE
Starting from the La Hisse lock near Saint-Samson follow the tow-path, passing through a number of small villages until the small river Port at Dinan.
Faites donc une balade en venant de l'écluse de La Hisse à Saint-Samson : vous suivrez ainsi l'ancien chemin de halage reliant les villages d'aval au petit port de Dinan.
LE PORT DU LYVET
From the Lyvet Port take the walk through the hamlet of Chatelier until you reach a small quay. Here river barges used to halt: today it's a great fishing spot.
THE VILLAGE OF TADEN
Built on the gently sloping hills above the Rance river valley, The village of Taden is known for it's manor house La Grand-Cour, where in summer, many local artists present their works. Between July and August there is an evening market every Friday night.
The manor is surrounded by old buildings giving the place a very authentic look.
The Taden plain slopes down toward the Rance river and at this point the river widens - a favorite spot for walkers and fisherman alike.
