Traditional Breton fêtes - the Festnoz

Traditional dancing in the Festnoz (simply Breton fetes) comes from the historical activity of preparing ground such as the traditional clay floor of houses or an area for beating wheatby stamping with heavy wooden shoes, or 'sabots'. Neighbours would come together to help each other to get the work done quickly. The work was traditionally accompanied by singing and the steps became dances.

At certain times of the year people would also gather and the dances became a way of having fun, becoming increasingly technical over time.

Today's Festnoz perpetuate this tradition and the dancing can be quite spectacular.

There are many Festnoz in Saint-Cast and the surrounding villages - the atmosphere is great and you can often join in a traditional meal.

Varied activities and entertainment all season

There are numerous daytime and evening activities all season in the towns and villages in the region - a fine way to discover more about the way of life past and present in Côte d'Armor region.

Markets

Markets in the region have a very traditional breton atmosphere. You'll often see musicians playing their 'biniou' a traditional local instrument. And in addition to fine local produce you'll appreciate the mouth-watering smell of the famous 'galette-saucisse' (savoury breton pancake with sausage). Fresh fish and seafood can be found in abundance - the stars of many northern Brittany markets.

Circuses

Many itinearnt circuses hold shows in the various Côte d'Armor towns…Great fun for all the family.

Exhibitions

Saint-Cast and other towns of the Côte d'Emeraude have summer exhibitions of photography, painting, archaeology etc.

Firework shows

Every year the major national bank holiday on the 14th of July is renknowned for the firework displays organised by most French towns. Other displays are also held on other dates. The major display in the region is at Saint-Malo, and Saint-cast, Dinard and Dianan also have spectacular displays.

Les régates

Sailing regattas are held all along the Emerald Coast throughout the summer season.
